Our team
Research scientists
Dr. Peter Sorensen has been studying invasive carp since 2006. The research team has included two postdoctoral fellows, a PhD student, two masters-degree students, three technicians, and five undergraduates. Their collective efforts have provided a solution to prevent carp populations from moving farther up the Mississippi River into Minnesota and Wisconsin waters.
Partners in this effort
Important partners in this research have included:
- US Fish & Wildlife Service–carp sampling
- MN Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR)–carp sampling and permits
- WI DNR–permits
- Fish Guidance Ltd.–carp deterrent advice
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers–access to locks and dams
- Fish Pass Great Lakes Fisheries Commission–passage modeling
- Barr Engineering Company–deterrent assessment.
Working together
Collaboration between research scientists, public agencies, engineers, and consultants has helped develop and understand what solutions will work best to control invasive carp in MN and WI waters while not harming native fish living in the same waterways.
